Memorial in Arnbjergpark
The Memorial in Arnbjerg Cemetery was established around year 1955 in honour of the seven resistance fighters from Varde, who died during World War II: Naval lieutenant Jørgen Østergaard, chief police officer Jørgen Bech Simony, foundry worker Niels Jessen, student Mogens Friis, doctor Knud Nordentoft, steel worker Peter Pedersen and assistant chief police officer Paul Emil Gerner-Mikkelsen.
Each year on the 4th of May, members of the Danish Ex-Servicemen’s League, Forsvarsbrødrene, mark the liberation of Denmark after World War II in 1945. In Mindelunden, there is a monument of freedom, created by Anker Hoffmann, as well as a memorial stone for each of the seven resistance fighters from Varde, who lost their lives.
