High percentages in Stauning

If you've climbed on your bike to cover the 100 km around Ringkøbing Fjord, you may be lucky enough to pass through the West Jutland town of Stauning, which is located a few hundred metres from the fjord. With just over 800 inhabitants, the town not only shares a surname with Denmark's first Social Democratic Prime Minister, but also a love for the fjord. And they have a thing for spirits in this small town.

Eat and drink well

What was once a cosy nook for local fishermen has now become a gastronomic gem in Stauning, and one that many drive to get to. At Restaurant Stauning Strand you can enjoy a four or five course menu of classic Danish food with a touch of gourmet flavour while enjoying the view of the fjord and the surrounding area.

With good food in your stomach, you often need to follow up with a nice drink. Sometimes it requires something a little stronger. Then it's lucky you've landed in Stauning. Because here, some of the best quality spirits in Denmark are produced. Nine good friends came up with the idea of creating their own distillery and Stauning Whisky was born. Here the whisky is produced with what's around them on the Jutland moors, and when you visit the distillery, you can smell the fermentation, the wood, the spirit and the grain long before you step inside. On the tour, you'll hear the story of how the distillery started in 2005 and even get the chance to taste the golden drops. In 2018, Stauning Whisky opened a brand new distillery with state-of-the-art equipment that, like the whisky, makes your mouth water.

It's a good sign when an interest catches and your fingers are itching to get started. This was the case for the partners Agger and Juhl, who started Lowlands Denmark in 2018. After years of running their own wine and delicatessen business, they had seen and visited many producers, and the producers' pride in their own production got under their skin. They then set about building their own distillery, and today you'll find gin, schnapps and premix cocktails on the shelves, brewed from local and carefully selected ingredients.

After a few high percentages and a full belly, it's nice to land somewhere soft, warm and cosy. If this is the case, it's probably best to team up with a driver who can take you to Hotel Skjern. Here you will be welcomed and taken care of. The hotel is located in the centre of Skjern and is currently owned by Kristina Bundesen and Christian Rasmussen. The hotel restaurant, Stuen th, is definitely worth a visit. Here you'll find food with a focus on local ingredients and a love for the art of cooking.

Flying high...

You can do that at the Danish Aviation Museum. Located in Stauning, the museum displays aircraft dating back to 1911 and up to the present day. Here you can experience aircraft from the Second World War and see the planes that today fly to the world's hot spots. During the summer months, it is possible to see several of the aeroplanes in flight.

Get some fresh air under your feet at WOW Park, located just north of Stauning. There are hours of fun and games in the treetops. Take a ride and feel the rush in your stomach as you swing in the slings or jump from treetop to treetop. Jump in the big nets and see the beautiful cabins in the trees. When your legs need a rest, you can buy delicious food and ice cream in the park's cosy café.

Skjern Handball has been flying for many years - and still is. The club, which plays in the best Danish league, the Men's League, has brought home many trophies and great experiences over the years. Book a ticket to one of their home matches and experience the euphoria of match and team spirit. You'll get a unique experience and a chance to see the great game of handball.

...deep to fall.

Every golfer knows that when the ball lands in the ‘bunker’, it can be so deep that it can be difficult to get up onto the green. The sport, which many have fallen for in recent years, is fun for everyone. Dejbjerg Golf Club's courses are located in scenic surroundings with views of forest and heather hills. For those with a golf card, the 18-hole course is the obvious choice, whereas the 6-hole Pay & Play course is for those who want to try their hand at the popular sport. In the cosy café and clubhouse, you can enjoy a bite to eat and possibly book an appointment with a professional golfer.

If the fresh air has caught your fancy, you should stop by Hangaards Have. The 24,000 m2 garden, which was created by garden designer Anne Hangaard and has been in bloom since 1986, is so rich in colour and beautiful flowers that the hours will quickly disappear. On your tour of the garden, you'll find up to 100 different varieties of clematis, and the new labyrinth from 2022 will engage all your senses.

Bend like a river

Many anglers from near and far will tell you that the area around Stauning and Skjern River is a great place to catch the fish. The river winds its way through the landscape, and although there are many fishermen in the area, you'll feel alone in your catch. At Laksens Hus you'll find all the information you need to know about salmon and their behaviour. Here you can also rent equipment, test fly rods, reels and lines with a cast in the casting pool, and buy fishing licences, which are essential for catching the tasty fish.

Before you grab your fishing rod and accessories, it's a good idea to visit the Korsholm Outdoor store, where you can get dressed for new nature adventures. Here you'll find quality clothing and equipment at competitive prices. The staff know what's good to wear and carry out in nature - whether it's for hunting or fishing.
